BG Chapter 12  Bhakti

 

 

अर्जुन उवाच

एवं सततयुक्ता ये भक्तास्त्वां पर्युपासते ।

ये चाप्यक्षरमव्यक्तं तेषां के योगवित्तमाः ॥१२- १॥

arjuna uvāca = Arjuna said: evam1 = thus; ye bhaktā3  = those devotees; satata-yuktā2  = ever absorbed [in You]; paryupāsate5 = worship; tvām4 = You; ca7 = and; ye6 = those [others]; api8 = again; [worship You]  [as] akṣaram9 = the Imperishable; [and] avyaktam10 = the Unmanifest; ke12 = who; teṣām11 = of [among] them; [are] yoga-vit-tamāḥ13  = the most learned in Yoga? 12.1
 

12.1:  Arjuna said: Those devotees who are absorbed in You, and those who worship You as the Aksaram (Imperishable) and the Avyaktam (Unmanifested): who among these have the most knowledge of yoga?

श्रीभगवानुवाच

मय्यावेश्य मनो ये मां नित्ययुक्ता उपासते ।

श्रद्धया परयोपेतास्ते मे युक्ततमा मताः ॥१२- २॥

śrībhagavān uvāca = Sri Bhagavan said: ye4 = those who; āveśya2 = fix; mana3 = the minds; mayi1 = on Me; nitya-yuktā6 = ever engaged; upāsate7 = in worship; mām5 = of Me; upetāḥ10 = endowed; [with] parayā9 = Supreme; śraddhayā8 = faith;  te11 = they; matāḥ13 = are considered; me12 = by Me; yukta-tamā12 = the most perfect Yogis.  12.2

12.2:  Sri Bhagavan said: They, who fix their mind on Me, always engage in worship with supreme faith and are considered by Me as perfect among yogis.

ये त्वक्षरमनिर्देश्यमव्यक्तं पर्युपासते ।

सर्वत्रगमचिन्त्यं च कूटस्थमचलं ध्रुवम् ॥१२- ३॥

tv2 = But; ye1 = those who; paryupāsate6 = worship; akṣaram3 = the Imperishable; anirdeśyam4 = the Indefinable; avyaktam5 = the Unmanifest;  sarvatragam7 = the Omnipresent; acintyam8 = the Incomprehensible; kūṭastham10 = the Unchanging;  acalam11 = the Immovable;  ca9 = and; dhruvam12 = the Eternal; 12.3
 

12.3-4:  Those, who worship the Aksaram, the indefinable, the Avyaktam, the Omnipresent, the Acintyam, the Unchanging, the Immovable and the Eternal, control all the senses, remain levelheaded (even-minded) under all circumstances, and dedicate themselves to the welfare of all creatures, attain Me.

संनियम्येन्द्रियग्रामं सर्वत्र समबुद्धयः ।

ते प्राप्नुवन्ति मामेव सर्वभूतहिते रताः ॥१२- ४॥

saṁniyamyendriyagrāmaṁ sarvatra samabuddhayāḥ
te prāpnuvanti mām eva sarvabhūtahite ratāḥ 12.4

saṁniyamya1 = controlling; indriya-grāmam2  = all the sense organs; sarvatra3 = at all times; samabuddhayāḥ4 = level-headed; te5 = they; prāpnuvanti6 = attain; mām7 = Me; eva8 = indeed;  ratāḥ10 = engaged; [in] sarva-bhūta-hite9 = welfare of all beings [all-beings-welfare]. 12.4
 

12.3-4:  Those, who worship the Aksaram, the indefinable, the Avyaktam, the Omnipresent, the Acintyam, the Unchanging, the Immovable and the Eternal, control all the senses, remain levelheaded (even-minded) under all circumstances, and dedicate themselves to the welfare of all creatures, attain Me.

क्लेशोऽधिकतरस्तेषामव्यक्तासक्तचेतसाम् ।

अव्यक्ता हि गतिर्दुःखं देहवद्भिरवाप्यते ॥१२- ५॥

avyaktā hi gatir duḥkhaṁ dehavadbhir avāpyate 12.5

adhikatara2  = greater; [is] kleśa1 = the difficulty; teṣām3 = for them; cetasām6 = whose thoughts; āsakta5 = are attached; avyaktā7 = to the Unmanifest;  hi8 = indeed; avyakta4 = the Unmanifest;gati9 = Goal; [is] duḥkham10 = difficult; avāpyate12 = to attain; deha-vadbhi11 = for the corporeal ones.12.5
 

12.5:  Greater is the difficulty for those whose thoughts are attached to the Unmanifest (Avyakta), for the progress towards attaining the Unmanifest by the embodied is difficult.

ये तु सर्वाणि कर्माणि मयि संन्यस्य मत्पराः ।

अनन्येनैव योगेन मां ध्यायन्त उपासते ॥१२- ६॥

tu2 = For; ye1 = those who; sannyasya6 = renounce [dedicate]; sarvāṇi3 = all; karmāi4 = activities; mayi5 = to Me;  matpara7 = accepting Me as the Supreme; ananyena8 = without having a second; eva9 = indeed; yogena10 = by doing Yoga [showing devotion]; upāsate13 = worshipping; [and] dhyāyanta12 = meditating; mām11 = on Me;    12.6
 

12.6:   For them, who dedicate all their activities to Me, accepting me as the Supreme without having a second, showing their devotion to Me, worshipping and meditating on Me, (Continued)

तेषामहं समुद्धर्ता मृत्युसंसारसागरात् ।

भवामि नचिरात्पार्थ मय्यावेशितचेतसाम् ॥१२- ७॥

teṣāṁ ahaṁ samuddhartā mṛtyusaṁsārasāgarāt
bhavāmi na cirāt pārtha mayy āveśitacetasām 12.7

aham2 = I; bhavāmi7 = become; samuddhartā3 = the deliverer; [from] mṛtyu4 saṁsāra5 sāgarāt6 = the death-dealing4 Samsara5 Ocean6  na8 cirāt9 = quickly [without delay]; pārtha10 = O Partha; teṣām1 = for them; cetasām13 = whose minds; āveśita12 = are fixed; mayi11 = on Me.  12.7
 

12.7:  I soon become their deliverer from the death-dealing ocean of Samsāra (birth and rebirth) O son of Partha (Arjuna), because they have their thoughts fixed on Me.

मय्येव मन आधत्स्व मयि बुद्धिं निवेशय ।

निवसिष्यसि मय्येव अत ऊर्ध्वं न संशयः ॥१२- ८॥

nivasiṣ
yasi mayy eva ata ūrdhvaṁ na saṁśayaḥ 12.8

ādhatsva4 = Stabilize; mana3  = the mind; mayi1 = on Me; eva2 = indeed;   buddhim6 niveśaya7 = get your Buddhi [intelligence] engaged; mayi5 = on Me;  na saṁśayaḥ13  = there is no doubt; nivasiṣyasi8 = you will reside; mayi9 = in Me; ata11 ūrdhvam12  = thereafter [after death]; eva10 = indeed.12.8
 

12.8:  Fix your mind on Me, let your intelligence (Buddhim) come to dwell on Me. You will live in Me after that. Of which, there is no doubt.

अथ चित्तं समाधातुं न शक्नोषि मयि स्थिरम् ।

अभ्यासयोगेन ततो मामिच्छाप्तुं धनंजय ॥१२- ९॥

atha cittaṁ samādhātuṁ na śaknoṣi mayi sthiram
abhyāsayogena tato mām ichāptu
ṁ dhanaṁjaya 12.9

7 tata8 mām9 iccha10 āptum11 dhananjaya12 12.9

 

atha1 = If; na śaknoṣi4  = you are not able; samādhātum3 = to set; [your] cittam2 = mind; sthiram6 = firmly; mayi5 = on Me; tata8 = then;  abhyāsa-yogena7 = practice of yoga of repetition [of My name];   [and] iccha10 = desire, seek; āptum11 = to attain; mām9 = Me; dhananjaya12 = O Dhanajaya.  12.9
 

12.9:  If you are not able to set your mind firmly on Me, then practice of yoga of repetition (of My name), and thus seek to attain Me, O Dhananjaya.

अभ्यासेऽप्यसमर्थोऽसि मत्कर्मपरमो भव ।

मदर्थमपि कर्माणि कुर्वन्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यसि ॥१२- १०॥

abhyāsepy asamarthosi matkarmaparamo bhava
madartham api karmā
i kurvan siddhim avāpsyasi 12.10

abhyāse1 api2 asamartha3 asi4 mat-karma-parama5 bhava6

[If] asi4 = you are; asamartha3 = unable; api2 = even; abhyāse1 = to practice [repetition of My name]; bhava6 = become; mat-karma-parama5  = [My-works-Supreme], dedicated to do My Supreme works;  avāpsyasi12 = you can attain; siddhim11 = perfection; api8 = even; kurvan10 = by performing;  karmāi9 = work; madartham7 = on My account.12.10

 

12.10:  If you are unable (even) to practice repetition, come to do My Supreme Work . You can attain perfection (Siddhim) by performing actions for My sake.

अथैतदप्यशक्तोऽसि कर्तुं मद्योगमाश्रितः ।

सर्वकर्मफलत्यागं ततः कुरु यतात्मवान् ॥१२- ११॥

sarvakarmaphalatyāgaṁ tataḥ kuru yatātmavān 12.11

atha1 = If; aśakta4 asi5 = you are5 unable4 kartum6 = to perform; api3 =  even; etat2 = this [devotional service]; āśritaḥ8 = take refuge [in]; madyogam7 = Yogam intended to attain Me; tataḥ10 = then; kuru11 = perform; sarva-karma-phala-tyāgam9  = all actions relinquishing the fruits [all-actions-fruits-relinquishment];  yata-ātmavān12 = with subdued self. 12.11
 

12.11:  If you are unable to perform (even this devotional service), take refuge in My Yogam (Mat Yogam Asritah), and perform all actions relinquishing the fruits [of all actions] with subdued self.

श्रेयो हि ज्ञानमभ्यासाज्ज्ञानाद्ध्यानं विशिष्यते ।

ध्यानात्कर्मफलत्यागस्त्यागाच्छान्तिरनन्तरम् ॥१२- १२॥

dhyānāt karmaphalatyāgas tyāgāc chāntir anantaram 12.12

śreya1 = Better; abhyāsāt4 = than practice; hi2 = indeed; [is] jñānam3 = knowledge; viśiṣyate7 = better; jñānāt5 = than knowledge; [is] dhyānam6 = meditation; [better] dhyānāt8 = than meditation; [is] karma-phala-tyāga9  =  relinquishment of fruits of actions [work-fruits-renunciation]; tyāgāt10 = by such relinquishment; śānti11 = peace; [comes] anantaram12 = immediately.12.12

 

12.12:  Better than practice is knowledge (of the self); better than knowledge is meditation; better than meditation is renunciation of the fruits of work. Because of such renunciation, peace comes immediately.

अद्वेष्टा सर्वभूतानां मैत्रः करुण एव च ।

निर्ममो निरहंकारः समदुःखसुखः क्षमी ॥१२- १३॥

adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṁ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca
nirmamo niraha
ṁkāraḥ samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī 12.13

adveṣṭā1 = He who has no hatred [for]; sarva-bhūtānām2  = all living beings; eva5 = indeed; maitraḥ3 = friendly; karuṇa4 = compassionate;  ca6 = and;  nirmama7 = free from sense of mineness; nirahakāraḥ8 = free from ego; sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ9  = equipoised in sorrow and happiness; kṣamī10 = patient; 12.13

 

12.13:  He who has no hatred of all living beings, friendly, compassionate, free from mine-ness and free from ego; is same in pleasure and pain, and patient; (continued)

संतुष्टः सततं योगी यतात्मा दृढनिश्चयः ।

मय्यर्पितमनोबुद्धिर्यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः ॥१२- १४॥

saṁtuṣṭaḥ satataṁ yogī yatātmā dṛḍhaniścayaḥ
mayy arpitamanobuddhir yo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ 12.14

santuṣṭaḥ1 satatam2 yogī3 yata-ātmā4 dṛḍha-niścayaḥ5

6 arpita-mana-buddhi7 ya8 madbhaktaḥ9 sa10 me11 priyaḥ12 12.14

 

yogī3 = Yogi; ya8 = who; [is] satatam2 = always; santuṣṭaḥ1 = self-contented;  yata-ātmā4  = self-controlled; dṛḍha-niścayaḥ5  = [of] firm faith;  mayi6 = in Me;  arpita-mana-buddhi7 = who has his mind and intellect fixed [on Me] [fixed-mind-intellect] ; sa10 = he; madbhaktaḥ9 = a votary of Mine; priyaḥ12 = [is] dear me11 = to Me. 12.14
 

12.14:  Yogi who is ever self-content, self-controlled, determined in his faith in Me, with his mind and intelligence dwelling upon Me, is My devotee dear to Me.

यस्मान्नोद्विजते लोको लोकान्नोद्विजते च यः ।

हर्षामर्षभयोद्वेगैर्मुक्तो यः स च मे प्रियः ॥१२- १५॥

yasmān nodvijate loko lokān nodvijate ca yaḥ
harṣāmarṣ
abhayodvegair mukto yaḥ sa ca me priyaḥ 12.15

yaḥ7 = He; yasmāt1 = by whom; loka3 = the world [people]; na udvijate2  = is not shuddered;  ca6 = and; ya10 = who; na udvijate5  = is not shuddered; lokāt4 = by the world [people]; ca12 = and; mukta9 = is free; harṣa amarṣa bhaya udvegai8 = from delight, displeasure, fear, and agitation; sa11 = he; [is] priyaḥ14 = dear;  me13 = to Me. 12.15
 

12.15:  He, by whom the world is not shuddered, who is not shuddered by the world, and who is free from delight, displeasure, fear, agitation, is also dear to Me.

अनपेक्षः शुचिर्दक्ष उदासीनो गतव्यथः ।

सर्वारम्भपरित्यागी यो मद्भक्तः स मे प्रियः ॥१२- १६॥

anapekṣaḥ śucir dakṣa udāsīno gatavyatha
sarvārambhaparityāgī yo madbhaktaḥ sa me priyaḥ 12.16

anapekṣaḥ1 śuci2 dakṣa3 udāsīna4 gata-vyatha5
sarva-ārambha-parityāgī
6 ya7 madbhaktaḥ8 sa9 me10 priyaḥ11 12.16

 

anapekṣaḥ1 = He who has no longing [for objects]; [is] śuci2 = pure; dakṣa3 = talented, dexterous; udāsīna4 = impartial; gata-vyatha5 = free from fear;  sarva-ārambha-parityāgī6  = who relinquished all undertakings [all-undertaking-relinquishment]; [and] ya7 = who; [is] madbhaktaḥ8 = My votary; sa9 = he; [is]  priyaḥ11 = dear; me10 = to Me.12.16

 

12.16:  He, who has no regard or longing for anything, is pure, talented, impartial, free from fear, and who has renounced all initiatives (in work) and is devoted to Me, is dear to Me.

यो न हृष्यति न द्वेष्टि न शोचति न काङ्क्षति ।

शुभाशुभपरित्यागी भक्तिमान्यः स मे प्रियः ॥१२- १७॥

yo na hṛṣyati na dveṣṭi na śocati na kāṅkṣati
śubhāśubhaparityāgī bhaktimān ya
ḥ sa me priyaḥ 12.17

ya1 = He who; na hṛṣyati2 = neither rejoices; na dveṣṭi3  = nor hates; na śocati4 = nor grieves; na kāṅkṣati5 = nor desires; ya8 śubha aśubha parityāgī6  = who renounced the good and the bad [good-bad-relinquisher]; sa9 = [he] that;  bhaktimān7 = devotee; priyaḥ11 = is dear; me10 = to Me. 12.17


12.17:  He, who neither rejoices nor hates; who neither grieves, nor desires; and who has renounced both the good and the evil, is a devotee dear to Me.

समः शत्रौ च मित्रे च तथा मानापमानयोः ।

शीतोष्णसुखदुःखेषु समः सङ्गविवर्जितः ॥१२- १८॥

samaḥ śatrau ca mitre ca tathā mānāpamānayoḥ
śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkheṣ
u samaḥ saṅgavivarjitaḥ 12.18

samaḥ1 śatrau ca mitre2 ca3 tathā4 mānā-pamānayoḥ5
śīta-uṣṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣ
u-sama6 saṅga-vivarjitaḥ7 12.18

 

[He who is] samaḥ1 = same; śatrau ca mitre2 = to a foe and to a friend; ca3 = and; tathā4= likewise [in that manner]; mānā-pamānayoḥ5  = in honor and dishonor; śīta-uṣṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣu-sama6  = same in cold, heat, happiness, and sorrow [in cold-heat-happiness-sorrow-same]; saṅga-vivarjitaḥ7 = free from attachment. 12.18  continued

 

12.18:  He who is same to a foe and a friend, also to honor and dishonor, in cold and heat, in pleasure and pain, who is free from attachment,

तुल्यनिन्दास्तुतिर्मौनी सन्तुष्टो येन केनचित् ।

अनिकेतः स्थिरमतिर्भक्तिमान्मे प्रियो नरः ॥१२- १९॥

tulyanindāstutir maunī saṁtuṣṭo yena kenacit
aniketa
ḥ sthiramatir bhaktimān me priyo naraḥ 12.19

ulya-nindā-stuti1 = equal in censure and eulogy; maunī2 = silent; santuṣṭa3 = content; yena-kenacit4 = with anything [and everything]; aniketa5 = having no home; sthira-mati6  = with firm mind; naraḥ10 = [that] man; [is] bhaktimān7 = a devotee; [and] priya9 = is dear;  me8 = to Me. 12.19

 

12.19:  equal in censure and praise, silent, content with anything, having no home, with firm mind, that man is a devotee and dear to Me.

ये तु धर्म्यामृतमिदं यथोक्तं पर्युपासते ।

श्रद्दधाना मत्परमा भक्तास्तेऽतीव मे प्रियाः ॥१२- २०॥

ye tu dharmyāmṛtam idaṁ yathoktaṁ paryupāsate
śraddadhānā matparamā bhaktās tetīva me priyāḥ 12.20

tu2 = But; ye1 = those; bhaktā10 = devotees; matparamā9 = holding Me as the Supreme Goal; śraddadhānā8 = with faith; paryupāsate7 =seek; idam4 = this; dharmyāmṛtam3 = nectar of duty.  yathā5 = as;  uktam6 = said; te11 = they; [are]; atīva12 = very; priyāḥ13 = dear;  me13 = to Me.  12.20

 

12.20:  The devotees who hold me as the Supreme Goal with faith and seek this nectar of duty as taught before, are very dear to Me.
