BG CHAPTER 10:  MANIFESTATION

 

श्रीभगवानुवाच 

भूय एव महाबाहो शृणु मे परमं वचः ।

यत्तेऽहं प्रीयमाणाय वक्ष्यामि हितकाम्यया ॥१०- १॥

śrībhagavān uvāca = Sri Bhagavan said: mahābāho3 = O mighty-armed one; śṛṇu4 = hear; bhūya1 eva2 = once again; me5 = My; paramam6 = Supreme; vacaḥ7= words; yat8 = which; aham10 = I; vakyāmi12 = say; te9 = to you; hita-kāmyayā13  = desirous of your welfare; prīyamāṇāya11 = for you love Me.  10.1
 

10.1: Sri Bhagavan said:

O Mahā-bāho, hear again My supreme words, which I say to you for your good, for you love Me.

न मे विदुः सुरगणाः प्रभवं न महर्षयः ।

अहमादिर्हि देवानां महर्षीणां च सर्वशः ॥१०- २॥

na me viduḥ suragaṇāḥ prabhavaṁ na maharṣayaḥ
aham ādir hi devānāṁ maharṣīṇāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ 10.2

na1 = Neither;  sura-gaṇāḥ4 = the gods; na6 = nor; maharṣayaḥ7 = the great sages; vidu3 = know; me2 = My; prabhavam5 = majesty (origin).  aham8 = I;  [am] hi10 = indeed; ādi9 = the origin; devānām11 = of the gods; ca13 = and; maharṣīṇām12  = of the Great Rishis; sarvaśaḥ14 = in all respects,  in every way.10.2


10.2: Neither the bevy of gods, nor the great sages (Rishis) know My Majesty (origin). I am also the origin of the gods and great rishis in every way.

यो मामजमनादिं च वेत्ति लोकमहेश्वरम् ।

असंमूढः स मर्त्येषु सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥१०- ३॥

ya1 = He who; vetti6 = knows; mām2 = Me; [as] ajam3 = unborn; anādim4 = beginningless; ca5 = and; loka-maheśvaram7 = the Great Controller of the worlds; sa9 = he; [is] asaṁmūḍhaḥ8 = undeluded;  martyeṣu10 = among mortals; pramucyate12 = freed; sarva-pāpai11 = from all sins.  10.3

10.3: He who knows Me as unborn, beginningless, and the Great Controller of the worlds, is undeluded among mortals and freed from all sins.

बुद्धिर्ज्ञानमसंमोहः क्षमा सत्यं दमः शमः ।

सुखं दुःखं भवोऽभावो भयं चाभयमेव च ॥१०- ४॥

10.4: Intelligence, knowledge, freedom from delusion, patience, truth, self-restraint, calmness, happiness, sadness, birth, death, fear, fearlessness,

अहिंसा समता तुष्टिस्तपो दानं यशोऽयशः ।

भवन्ति भावा भूतानां मत्त एव पृथग्विधाः ॥१०- ५॥

bhavanti bhāvā bhūtānāṁ matta eva pṛthagvidhāḥ 10.5

ahiṁ1 = noninjury; samatā2 = equanimity; tuṣṭi3 = contentment; tapa4 = austerity; dānam5 =charity; yaśaḥ-ayaśaḥ6  = fame and infamy: [these]  pṛthak-vidhāḥ12 = different; bhāvā8 = natures; bhūtānām9 = of living beings; bhavanti7 = come;  matta10 eva11 = from Me. 10.5

10.5: and ahimsa (nonviolence), equanimity, contentment, austerity, charity, fame and infamy: these different natures of living beings come from Me only.

महर्षयः सप्त पूर्वे चत्वारो मनवस्तथा ।

मद्भावा मानसा जाता येषां लोक इमाः प्रजाः ॥१०- ६॥

sapta2 = The seven; maharṣayaḥ1 = Great Rishis; pūrve3 = of ancient days; tathā6 = also; catvāra4 = four; manava5 = Manus; madbhāvā7 = born of My nature; [and] mānasā8 = from my mind:  imāḥ12 = these; prajāḥ13 = creatures; loke11 = in the world; jātā9 = are born; yeṣām10 = of  them [Rishis and Manus]. 10.6
 

10.6:  The seven Great Rishis and the four Manus of ancient days are of My Nature and born of My mind. In this world,  these creatures are born of them (Rishis and Manus).

एतां विभूतिं योगं च मम यो वेत्ति तत्त्वतः ।

सोऽविकम्पेन योगेन युज्यते नात्र संशयः ॥१०- ७॥

sovikampena yogena yujyate nātra saṁśayaḥ 10.7

ya6 = He who [whoever]; vetti7 = knows;  tattvataḥ8 = in truth; etām1 = this; vibhūtim2 = plenitude/pervasion; ca4 = and; yogam3 = power of Yoga;  mama5 = of Mine; sa9 = he;  yujyate12 = is endowed with; avikampena10 = unwavering;  yogena11 = Yoga.  [There is] na13 = no; saṁśayaḥ15 = doubt; atra14 = about this.10.7

10.7:  He who knows in truth My Pervasive Manifestation and  power of Yoga (Vibhutim and Yogam) is steadfast in yoga. Never is there any doubt.

अहं सर्वस्य प्रभवो मत्तः सर्वं प्रवर्तते ।

इति मत्वा भजन्ते मां बुधा भावसमन्विताः ॥१०- ८॥

aham1 = I; [am] prabhava3 = the origin; sarvasya2 = of all.  mattaḥ4 = From Me; sarvam5 = all; pravartate6 = proceeds.  iti7 = Thus; matvā8 = knowing ; budhā11 = the wise ones; bhajante9 = worship; mām10 = Me;  bhāva-samanvitāḥ12  = with faith and conviction.10.8

10.8:  I am the origin of all. From Me everything proceeds. Thus knowing, the wise ones worship Me with conviction.

मच्चित्ता मद्गतप्राणा बोधयन्तः परस्परम् ।

कथयन्तश्च मां नित्यं तुष्यन्ति च रमन्ति च ॥१०- ९॥

kathayantaś ca māṁ nityaṁ tuṣ
yanti ca ramanti ca 10.9

maccittā1 = With their mind focused on Me; mad-gata-prāṇā2 = their lives dedicated or surrendered to Me;  bodhayanta3 = enlightening; parasparam4 = one another; ca6 = and; kathayanta5 = talking about; mām7 = Me; nityam8 = always; [they] tuṣyanti9 = become contented; ca10 = and; ca12 = also; ramanti11 = enjoy delight. 10.9

10.9:  With their mind (Citta) focused on Me and their lives (prānas) dedicated or surrendered to Me, enlightening one another by always talking about Me, they enjoy happiness and delight.

तेषां सततयुक्तानां भजतां प्रीतिपूर्वकम् ।

ददामि बुद्धियोगं तं येन मामुपयान्ति ते ॥१०- १०॥

teṣāṁ satatayuktānāṁ bhajatāṁ prītipūrvakam
dadāmi buddhiyogaṁ taṁ yena mām upayānti te 10.10

teṣām1 = To them; satata-yuktānām2  = who are continuously devoted; [and] bhajatām3 = worship; [Me] prīti-pūrvakam4 = with eternal love; dadāmi5 = I give; buddhi-yogam6  = Yoga of Intelligence; tam7 = that; yena8 = by which;  te11 = they; upayānti10 = come; mām9 = to Me. 10.10  

10.10:   To them who are continuously devoted, and worship Me with eternal love, I give Buddhi Yogam (Yoga of intelligence), by which they come to Me.

तेषामेवानुकम्पार्थमहमज्ञानजं तमः ।

नाशयाम्यात्मभावस्थो ज्ञानदीपेन भास्वता ॥१०- ११॥

teṣām evānukampārtham aham ajānajaṁ tamaḥ
nāśayāmy ātmabhāvastho jānadīpena bhāsvatā 10.11

anukampā-artham3  = Out of compassion; teṣām1 = for them; eva2 = alone; aham4 = I; ātma-bhāva-stha8 = abiding in their self; nāśayāmi7 = destroy; tamaḥ6 = darkness; ajānajam5 = born of ignorance;  bhāsvatā10 = with the shining; jāna-dīpena9  = lamp of wisdom. 10.11


10.11:  Out of compassion  for them alone, I destroy their ignorance and darkness by abiding in their self with the shining lamp of wisdom.

अर्जुन उवाच 

परं ब्रह्म परं धाम पवित्रं परमं भवान् ।

पुरुषं शाश्वतं दिव्यमादिदेवमजं विभुम् ॥१०- १२॥

arjuna uvāca  = Arjuna said: bhavān7 = You; [are] param1 = the Supreme; brahma2 = Brahman; param3 = the Supreme; dhāma4 = abode; pavitram5 = the purifier; paramam6 = the Supreme;  puruṣam8 = Purusa; śāśvatam9 = the Eternal; divyam10 = the Divine; ādi-devam11 = the First Primal Lord; ajam12 = the Unborn; vibhum13 = the all-pervader.10.12

10.12:  Arjuna said:

You are the Supreme Brahman, the Supreme abode, the Supreme purifier, the Eternal, the Divine, the First Primal God, the Unborn, and all-pervading.

आहुस्त्वामृषयः सर्वे देवर्षिर्नारदस्तथा ।

असितो देवलो व्यासः स्वयं चैव ब्रवीषि मे ॥१०- १३॥

sarve4 = All; ṛṣayaḥ3 = Rishis; āhu1 = say; tvām2 = of You:  devarṣi5 = Divine Rishi; nārada6 = Narada; tathā7 = also; asita8 = Asita; deval9 = Devala; vyāsa10 = Vyasa; ca12 = and; svayam11 = You Yourself;  eva13 = indeed; bravīṣi14 = tell; me15 = Me. 10.13


10.13:  All Rishis (sages) say this of you. The deva-rishis like Narada, also Asita, Devala, Vyasa, and You Yourself are telling me.

सर्वमेतदृतं मन्ये यन्मां वदसि केशव ।

न हि ते भगवन्व्यक्तिं विदुर्देवा न दानवाः ॥१०- १४॥

10.14:  I hold all that you told me as true, O Kesava (Krishna). Neither the gods nor the demons know your manifestation, O Bhagavan (Lord).

स्वयमेवात्मनात्मानं वेत्थ त्वं पुरुषोत्तम ।

भूतभावन भूतेश देवदेव जगत्पते ॥१०- १५॥

tvam6 = You; svayam1 = Yourself; eva2 = alone; vettha5 = know; ātmānam4 = Yourself; ātmanā3  = by Yourself; puruṣottama7 = O Supreme Lord; bhūta-bhāvana8  = Creator of all beings; bhūteśa9 = the Lord of beings; deva-deva10 = God of gods; jagat-pate10  = the Lord of the worlds. 10.15

10.15:  You alone know Yourself by You, O Supreme person (Purusa-Uttama), Creator of all beings, Lord of everything, God of all gods, and Lord of the universe.

वक्तुमर्हस्यशेषेण दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः ।

याभिर्विभूतिभिर्लोकानिमांस्त्वं व्याप्य तिष्ठसि ॥१०- १६॥

yābhir vibhūtibhir lokān imāṁ

hi5  = Indeed; arhasi2 =  be inclined; vaktum1 = to tell; [me] ātma6  = your; divyā4  = divine; vibhūtaya7 = manifestations; aśeṣeṇa3  = in details;  yābhi8  = by which; vibhūtibhi9  = manifestations; tvam12 = You; vyāpya13  = pervade; [and] tiṣṭhasi14 = abide; [in] imān11  = these; lokān10  = worlds. 10.16

 

10.16:  You alone can give me details of your divine manifestations, and by such manifestations, you pervade all the worlds and abide (in them).

कथं विद्यामहं योगिंस्त्वां सदा परिचिन्तयन् ।

केषु केषु च भावेषु चिन्त्योऽसि भगवन्मया ॥१०- १७॥

katham1 = How; aham3 vidyām2 = may I3 know2; tvām5 = you; yogin4 = O Yogin? [You] sadā6 = always; paricintayan7 = are remaining in meditation; ca10 = and; keṣu8 = in what;  keu9 = in what; bhāveu11 = forms, aspects or objects; cintya12 asi13 = are You to be thought of;  mayā15 = by me; bhagavan14 = O Bhagavan? 10.17


10.17:  How may I know you O Yogin, by always thinking of you? Moreover, in what aspects, am I to think of you O Bhagavan?

विस्तरेणात्मनो योगं विभूतिं च जनार्दन ।

भूयः कथय तृप्तिर्हि शृण्वतो नास्ति मेऽमृतम् ॥१०- १८॥

janārdana6 = O Janardana; tṛpti9 = tell;  bhūyaḥ7 = again; vistareṇa1 = in detail; ātmana2 = Your; yogam3 = Yogam; ca5 = and; vibhūtim4 = manifestations. hi10  = Indeed; na asti12 = there is no;  tṛpti9 = satiation; me13 = in me; śṛṇvata11 = hearing; [Your] amtam14 = nectar [-like words]. 10.18

10.18:  O Janardhana (Krishna) tell me again in detail your yogam and vibhutim (power of yoga and manifestations). There is no satiation or satisfaction in me in hearing your nectar-like words.

हन्त ते कथयिष्यामि दिव्या ह्यात्मविभूतयः ।

प्राधान्यतः कुरुश्रेष्ठ नास्त्यन्तो विस्तरस्य मे ॥१०- १९॥

śrībhagavān uvāca = Sri Bhagavan said: hi5 = indeed; ātma-vibhūtaya6  = My manifestations; [are] divyā4 = divine;  kuru-śreṣṭha7 = O the Best of Kurus.  kathayiyāmi3 = I will describe; hanta1 = now; te2 = to you; prādhānyataḥ7 = only those that are important.  na asti8  = There is no; anta9 = end; [to] me11 = My; vistarasya10 = expanse, magnitude, extent. 10.19

Sri Bhagavan said:

10.19:  O Kurusreshta (Arjuna), My manifestations are divine; I will now tell you only the most important of the manifestations, because there is no end to My expansion.

अहमात्मा गुडाकेश सर्वभूताशयस्थितः ।

अहमादिश्च मध्यं च भूतानामन्त एव च ॥१०- २०॥

guākeśa3 = O Master of sleep [Arjuna]; aham1 = I; [am] ātmā2 = the Self; āśaya-sthita5 = seated in the heart; sarva-bhūta4  = of all beings; ca14 = moreover; aham6 = I;  [am] ādi7 = the beginning; ca8 = and; madhyam9 = the middle; ca10 = and; eva13 = indeed; anta12 = the end; bhūtānām11 = of [all] beings.  10.20 

10.20:  I am the Atma O Gudakesa (Arjuna) seated in the hearts of all living beings. I am the beginning, also the middle, and certainly the end of all beings.

आदित्यानामहं विष्णुर्ज्योतिषां रविरंशुमान् ।

10.40: There is no end to My divine manifestations, O Parantapa, conqueror of enemies. This is only a brief exposition by Me of the vastness of My manifestations.

tvam11 = you; avagaccha10  = know; yat yat1 = Whatever; sattvam3 = object; [has] vibhūtimat2 = excellence; śrīmad4 = splendor; 7 = or; ūrjitam5 = power; eva6 = verily;  tat tat8 = all that; eva9 = indeed; aṁśa14 = a fragment; [of] mama12 = My; teja13 = splendor; [as its] sambhavam15 = source. 10.41   
 

10.41:  Whatever being has vitality, splendor and power, know that to be a manifestation of a fragment of My splendor.

विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नमेकांशेन स्थितो जगत् ॥१०- ४२॥

athavā1 = Besides; kim4 = what;  etena3 = of this; bahuna2 = surfeit; [of]  tava6 = your; jātena5 = knowledge;  arjuna7 = O Arjuna? aham9 = I; sthita14 = remain; viṣṭabhya8 = supporting;  idam10 = this; kṛtsnam11 = entire; jagat15 = universe; [by] eka12 = one; aṁśena13 = fraction [of Myself]. 10.42

 

10.42:  What benefit do you gain from surfeit of this knowledge, O Arjuna? I support this entire universe with a fraction of My energy or Myself.
